The School Games is the governments legacy project celebrating the London Olympics 2012. The School Games Organiser role replaces the PDM role, however the position is only funded for three days a week. The SGO is tasked with coordinating a series of local and regional hub events leading into the Kent School Games. the training of young leaders is also an important area of work as they will assist with the running and organising of many of the events. Luckily in Kent,Our School Games Journey began in 2008, when KCC launched their own School Games. So the governments new plans support an already existing stucture.
The Kent School Games are being led jointly by KCC Communities Directorate and Children, Families and Education Directorate. They are being developed through a partnership involving School Games Organisors, Specialist Sports Colleges and governing bodies of sport; all managed by KCC Sport, Leisure and Olympics Service and Advisory Service Kent.
Overall, theKent School Gameshas 87 Finals events in 36 sports, held between February and the end of June at 15 venues across the County. This years Kent School Games will see a number of changes to both the format of the event and also the variety of Sports involved. The most significant changes are as follows:The Finals will be held over a longer period, in order to fit better with the seasonality of a number of sports and prevent duplication with existing events. The Finals will fit within the new National School Games structure The Games will be co-branded with the National School Games logo, in addition to the KCC logo and the P and O branding. Independent schools will take part in some of the sports (a requirement of the national structure). Medway schools will be involved for the first time. There will be additional artistic and cultural activity at the Finals.
Secondary Schools have been given a small amount of funding to support the SGO, to appoint a 'Teacher Release' programme. The roll is similar to that of the SSCo, however these teachers will work only one day a week to support their family of primary schools to develop an intra and inter school programme of events across the year.
