What is it? This is a series of 5 friendly orienteering events in parks in North West Kent. A great way to learn orienteering or improve the skills you already have.
There is one “score” course, which suitable for everyone from complete beginners and young juniors, to experienced orienteers. Find as many control flags as possible in the 45 minute time limit. You are not expected to find all 20. Most will find between 5 and 15 flags. If you get stuck on one, just move onto the next one. Flags with a number in the 60’s will be very easy to find and suitable for complete beginners and young juniors. Control flags with a number in the 70’s will be a little bit harder, and the 80’s are as hard as possible to keep experienced orienteers happy.
Some of the parks are small, but the planning will ensure that experienced orienteers who think they can get them all in the time limit will need to run 5-6 km.
Start time and registration. A mass start at 11.30. Please visit registration between 10.45 and 11.15 to buy a map and hire a dibber (which records your time electronically) if you don’t already have one. You will be given your orienteering map at registration so you can plan your route and ask any questions.
Timing, prizes and league. After you have finished and returned your dibber, you will be given a printout showing your times between the controls. You will score 1 point for every control you found, and 1 point deducted for every minute or part minute you are late. We will aim to announce the winners in various age/sex categories within 20 minutes of the finish and maybe present some prizes. There will also be a league with the best 2 scores out of 5 counting, and results displayed on our website.
What equipment do you need? Nothing special. Old trainers if it looks muddy, something waterproof if wet. A compass is useful but not essential.
Fees: Adults £4, Juniors FREE, Family/group competing together £4, Dibber Hire £1, Extra maps £1.
Help for beginners: Please ask at registration where club members can help you. If you have any questions before the event please email newcomers@dfok.co.uk
